Player-to-Court Count Guide
See playing spots and byes for 4–32 players across 1–8 courts.
Direct answer: Each doubles court needs four players. Active courts are min(available courts, floor(players ÷ 4)); unused courts stay empty and leftover players receive byes.
Common examples
Eight players fill two courts with no byes. Ten players on two courts create two byes. Seventeen players on four courts create one bye.
More courts do not invent players
Six players and four available courts still activate one court, not four. Two players remain on bye while three courts stay unused.
Plan for courtside readability
Label courts with short, visible names such as North, South, 1, or 2. A printable sheet should keep each four-player assignment together.
How many courts for 20 pickleball players?
Five doubles courts use all 20 players. With fewer than five courts, each missing court adds four bye spots.
